Marketing automation for Philippine businesses

Short answer

Marketing automation is software that sends the right message to a contact when something happens, such as a form submission or a purchase, and records what the contact does next. In the Philippines the main channels are Messenger, SMS, Viber and WhatsApp, and email. Each has its own sender and consent rules. Start with one welcome sequence of three messages and one clear goal.

What marketing automation does

A manual process looks like this: someone enquires, a staff member remembers to reply, then forgets to follow up. Automation turns the same steps into rules. A trigger, for example a form submission, starts a workflow that sends a message, waits, checks whether the person replied, and sends the next one or alerts staff.

The parts are the same on every tool:

  1. A contact list with consent recorded for each channel.
  2. Triggers that start a sequence.
  3. Messages for each step and channel.
  4. Rules that decide who continues, who waits and who stops.
  5. Reports that show replies, bookings and sales.

This guide is tool neutral. The AI automation guide covers how AI models fit into the same pattern, and the workflow guide for small business covers non-marketing tasks.

SMS. Twilio’s Philippines guidelines, read on 12 Oct 2026, state that “Sender ID Registration is required in the Philippines” and that messages from unregistered sender IDs have been blocked since 7 April 2025. They allow promotional and broadcast messages only to subscribers who “specifically opted-in”, require an opt-out method, bar shortened URLs and phone numbers in message content, and say to contact people in daytime hours unless a message is urgent. These are one provider’s rules for traffic on its routes. Carriers set the underlying requirements, so ask your SMS provider which apply to you.

Viber. Viber’s business site lists Business Messages, Automation & Calls, Ads Manager and Business Account among its products, split into SMB and Enterprise solutions. It gave no prices on the page read. Philippine rates and set-up come from Viber or an accredited partner.

WhatsApp. Meta’s pricing page says it has charged per template message since 1 July 2025, that non-template messages are free inside a 24 hour customer service window, and that the +63 calling code falls under “Rest of Asia Pacific”.

Email. Pick a tool that handles unsubscribes and records consent for you. The options below include free tiers.

Data Privacy Act. Contact lists hold personal data: names, phone numbers, email addresses and chat history. In the Philippines, Republic Act No. 10173, the Data Privacy Act of 2012, governs how a business collects and uses it, and the National Privacy Commission enforces it. The exact consent requirements for marketing messages, and any NPC guidance on opt-out for existing customers: Not confirmed from the NPC’s own pages on 12 Oct 2026, because the commission’s site refused automated access. Read the Act and the NPC’s Circular No. 2023-04 on consent at privacy.gov.ph, and get advice from Philippine counsel for your case. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Platform rules. WhatsApp’s Business Messaging Policy, last updated 23 September 2026, requires that “you have received opt-in permission from the recipient”, suggests separate opt-in by message category, and asks businesses to give clear instructions for opting out. It allows automation inside the 24 hour window but says automation must come with “prompt, clear, and direct escalation paths” to a person. Meta’s Messenger rules are in the Messenger bot guide.

Practical rules that follow from these sources.

  • Collect permission per channel and keep a record of when and how it was given.
  • Say what the person will receive and how often.
  • Put a way to stop in every message, such as “reply STOP”.
  • Stop sending to anyone who opts out, on every sequence.
  • Offer a route to a person.

Mailchimp. Mailchimp’s pricing page, read on 12 Oct 2026, lists a Free plan at $0 a month with a limit of 250 contacts and a maximum of 500 sends a month or 250 a day. Flows are not included on Free. Essentials lists up to 4 flow steps, Standard lists up to 200 flows, and Premium adds enhanced automation flows. Paid prices on the page carried a 50 percent introductory discount for 12 months with the later price left blank, and the page did not name the currency of its “$” amounts, so no paid price or peso conversion is given here. Read the page for the contact tier you need. Searches for “Mailchimp cost” are answered there.

ActiveCampaign. The pricing page read on 12 Oct 2026 listed Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise email plans, all billed annually, but showed no amounts (“Starts at --”). It offers a 14 day trial without a credit card. Search for “ActiveCampaign pricing” and you will see third-party figures; this site quotes only the vendor, so check the page after choosing a contact tier.

AI in marketing automation. An AI model can draft message variants or classify replies, and some tools sell it as an add-on. It can be wrong, so keep a person reviewing results. The AI automation guide covers the checks. Mailchimp’s page lists generative AI as not included on Free and Essentials and as an add-on at no additional cost on Standard and Premium.

Build a first sequence

A welcome sequence suits almost any business.

  1. Pick the goal

Choose one outcome, such as a booked consultation or a first purchase.

  2. Choose the trigger

Use a form submission, a Messenger conversation or a new customer record.

  3. Write three messages

The first confirms and says what happens next. The second answers the most common question. The third offers the next step, such as a booking link.

  4. Set the gaps

Space the messages so they do not feel like a flood, and stop the sequence when the person replies or books.

  5. Add the exits

A STOP reply ends the sequence, and a question goes to staff.

  6. Test with your own contact

Run it end to end and check each message on a phone.

  7. Review

Read replies and results weekly, then adjust one thing at a time.

Keep the first sequence to one channel. Add a second only after the first runs cleanly.

What to measure

Count replies, bookings, opt-outs and sales that follow the sequence. Compare them with the period before you started. The benefits guide shows how to build a baseline.

Frequently asked questions

What is marketing automation?

Software that sends messages to contacts when they take an action or on a schedule, and records what they do next. Examples are a welcome sequence after a form submission or a reminder before an appointment.

What are the best marketing automation platforms for a small business?

It depends on the channels you use. A CRM with automation suits lead follow-up, a chat builder suits Messenger, and an email tool suits newsletters. Compare each vendor’s own pricing page, including usage charges, and test with a free plan or trial.

Is marketing automation allowed in the Philippines?

Yes, with rules. The Data Privacy Act of 2012 applies to contact lists, SMS needs sender ID registration and opt-in, and WhatsApp and Messenger have their own opt-in and window rules. Get advice from Philippine counsel for your case.

What does email marketing automation cost?

It varies by tool and contact count. Mailchimp lists a Free plan at $0 with 250 contacts and no flows. ActiveCampaign’s pricing page showed no amounts when read. Check the vendor’s page for your contact tier.

Can AI do marketing automation?

AI can help draft messages or sort replies inside an automation tool. A person should review its output, and the tool still needs consent records and opt-out handling.

Where do I start?

With one welcome sequence of three messages on one channel and one measurable goal.
