How to set up a Messenger bot for a Philippine business Page
Short answer
A Messenger bot answers messages sent to a Facebook Page without a person typing each reply. There are three routes: the automated responses built into Meta’s Inbox, a bot builder such as Manychat, and a builder with AI answers added. This guide follows the vendor documentation read on 12 Oct 2026, lists the Meta messaging rules, shows prices in pesos with the date they were read, and has not been hands-on tested.

What a Messenger bot does for a Page
Many Pages get the same questions every day: price, location, hours, stock, delivery, payment. A bot answers those first and leaves unusual cases to a person. The glossary entry for chatbot gives the short definition, and what AI automation is shows how a bot fits into a larger workflow. A bot is the first reply, a way to collect details and a route to the right person. It does not replace the person behind the Page.
Before starting
Check the Page role. You need to manage the Page. Manychat states that it works only with Facebook business Pages, not personal profiles or groups (Manychat Help, read 12 Oct 2026). Connecting a builder asks for a Facebook sign-in, so the Page owner or admin should do that step.
Open Inbox in Meta Business Suite. Meta’s Help Center lists the Inbox tools: saved replies, automated responses, labels, notes and assigning conversations (Best practices for tools in Inbox, read 12 Oct 2026). Menu names change, so use that page as the reference when a screen looks different.
Write down the ten questions customers send most. Pull them from last month’s chats and write the answer you want for each, in the language your customers use. This list is the content of the bot on every route.
Choose a route
| Route | What it is | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Built-in Meta tools | Instant replies, away messages and FAQ replies in the Page’s Inbox | A greeting and set opening hours | Greetings and basic replies; fuller flows need a builder |
| 2. A bot builder | A tool such as Manychat that runs flows on the Page | Menus, buttons, collecting details, comment triggers | A subscription past the free limits; flows live in the tool’s account |
| 3. A builder with AI answers | A builder plus an AI model that answers free text | Questions outside a fixed menu | Answers can be wrong; needs testing and a handover to staff |

Route 1: built-in Meta tools
Meta’s Inbox tools page lists three automated responses that suit most small Pages (Meta Business Help Center, read 12 Oct 2026):
- Instant replies. An automated reply sent to anyone who messages the Page. Use it to say hello, describe the Page, or say when to expect a person. The page lists it for messaging on Instagram on desktop and Android. Whether it applies to every Facebook Page: Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026.
- Away schedule and messages. The Page’s status is set to away during scheduled hours, with a message that says when people can expect a reply.
- Frequently asked questions. Replies built from questions you add in the Page’s About section, such as contact information, location and hours. Meta lists this for Messenger on desktop.
Open Inbox
Sign in to Meta Business Suite with an account that manages the Page and open Inbox. Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026: the exact menu path to automated responses.
Write the greeting
Say who you are, what the Page can help with and when a person will reply. Keep it short.
Fill in the About section
Enter hours, location and contact information so FAQ replies have something to send.
Set away hours
Schedule the hours when nobody is available and write an away message with the next reply time.
Send a test message
Message the Page from a second Facebook account and check each reply.
Route 1 stops at greetings, hours and location. Menus, order forms and stock questions need Route 2 or 3.
Route 2: a bot builder
A bot builder is a no-code tool that connects to your Page and lets you draw the conversation as a flow. Manychat is the example here. Its pricing page lists Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, TikTok, SMS and email as channels. Other builders exist; compare them on free-plan limits, price growth and who owns the flows.
Connect the Page
Manychat’s help article gives these steps for a new user (How to connect Facebook to Manychat, read 12 Oct 2026):
Start
Go to Manychat and click Get started.
Choose the channel
Pick Facebook Messenger from the list of channels.
Connect Facebook
Follow the prompts to connect your Facebook account. This grants the permissions Manychat needs to build automations. The Facebook password is needed here, so the Page owner enters it.
Pick the Page
Choose the right Facebook Page from the list shown.
Connect
Click Connect to finish.
One Manychat account connects to one Facebook Page. A second Page needs a second account. Create the account with the business owner’s email so the flows stay with the business if a freelancer leaves.
Build a welcome flow
A welcome flow is the first thing a new contact sees: a greeting, three or four buttons for the most common questions, and a “talk to a person” button. Manychat’s Welcome Message article was not opened for this page, so its exact steps are Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026.
Keyword and comment triggers
A trigger starts a flow. The one many Philippine sellers want is a keyword in a comment: a customer comments “price” on a post and gets a Messenger message. Manychat documents it as the Facebook comments trigger (Facebook Comments Trigger, read 12 Oct 2026):
Create the automation
In Manychat go to Automations and click New automation.
Add the trigger
In the flow builder click New trigger and choose User comments on your post.
Choose the post
Set it to work with any post or one specific post.
Set the keywords
Enter words a comment must include and words that should not trigger it, or react to any comment.
Limit to top-level comments
Optionally respond only to first-level comments, which are direct comments and not replies under another comment.
Add the replies
Configure the optional public reply under the comment and the private reply in Messenger.
The article lists limits. Event, Offer and Job posts are not supported, nor are reposts from other Pages. Photos and videos should be uploaded directly from the device. Posts scheduled through Meta Business Suite did not appear in the post list at the time of reading, which Manychat attributes to a known issue on Facebook’s side. Triggers for keywords typed inside Messenger are a separate feature, and their steps are Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026.
Whether the Manychat API or a given connector needs a paid plan: Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026. Check the pricing page before you rely on one.
Route 3: adding AI answers
A fixed menu returns only what you wrote. A large language model composes new wording each time, so it can say something that is wrong, a failure called hallucination. Manychat’s pricing page lists “Manychat AI” on its Pro, Business and Advanced plans. How its AI is configured and what information it reads: Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026. Read Manychat’s AI help articles before enabling it.
Three practices apply to any AI reply:
- Give it approved information only. Supply the price list, hours, policies and delivery areas, and tell it to say “I will ask a staff member” when the answer is not in that material.
- Keep money and health questions with people. Variable prices, refunds, complaints and anything medical go to staff.
- Mind personal data. Names, phone numbers and addresses are personal data under the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (RA 10173). NPC Advisory No. 2024-04 of 19 December 2024 addresses AI systems that process personal data; the AI automation guide has the citation. This page is general information, not legal advice.
What to test. Before the public sees AI answers, use real messages from your chat history. Send each of the ten questions in English, Filipino and mixed language. Send questions the bot should not answer, such as a refund dispute, and check that it passes them to a person. Send a question about a product you do not sell and check that it does not invent an answer. Read every reply against your approved information.
Meta rules every Page must follow
Meta’s rules apply on every route. This section comes from the Messenger Platform pages read on 12 Oct 2026: the policy overview, the overview, marketing messages and the changelog.
Standard messaging window. A business has up to 24 hours to respond to a person. The window opens when the person acts, for example by messaging the Page or clicking a Click-to-Messenger ad. Inside it, messages may include promotional content.
Human Agent tag. The policy page states that the tag lets a business reply manually within 7 days. Whether it needs App Review: Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026.
Message tags. Tags allow messages outside the window for approved uses. Using one outside its approved use can restrict your ability to send. The changelog entry of 27 March 2026 states that from 27 April 2026 requests using the deprecated tags CONFIRMED_EVENT_UPDATE, ACCOUNT_UPDATE and POST_PURCHASE_UPDATE receive error code 100, and recommends Utility Templates or the Marketing Messages API. A Page that used those tags for order or appointment reminders needs another route.
Opt-in. A person must opt in before a Page sends marketing messages outside the window, and the opt-in request can be sent only inside the window. The marketing messages page also states that, from 1 September 2025, the Recurring Notifications format is limited to existing partners and end-clients, and that it is scheduled for deprecation on 10 February 2026. Whether a small Page can use the newer Marketing Messages on Messenger API: Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026.
Responsiveness. The policy page states that automated bots must respond to user input within 30 seconds.
Disclosure that the reply is automated. The policy page states that, when required by applicable law, automated chat experiences must disclose that the person is talking to an automated service: at the start, after a significant lapse of time, and when a chat moves from a person to a bot. It also recommends disclosure as good practice where the law does not require it. Which Philippine law requires it, if any: Not confirmed. As good practice, open every bot flow with a line such as “You are chatting with our automated assistant. Type PERSON to reach staff.”
App Review. The overview states that App Review is not required if an app only sends and receives messages for your own Page. Advanced Access, which extends data access to all app users, requires App Review, and Business Verification is needed if people without a role on the app will use it. This matters only for a custom bot built by a developer.
Handing a chat to a person
A bot that cannot hand off loses customers. Put a “talk to a person” button in every menu. When it is pressed, the bot stops replying, tells the customer a person will answer, and notifies staff.
- Inbox handover. Staff reply from the builder’s inbox or from Meta’s Inbox. Manychat has a Conversation Routing article for Facebook Messenger; it was not opened for this page, so its steps are Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026.
- Notifications. Decide who is alerted and where, and name a person for each shift. A handover nobody watches is worse than no bot. Keep the windows in mind: 24 hours for standard replies, 7 days for manual replies under the Human Agent tag.
What it costs
Route 1 has no listed fee. Routes 2 and 3 depend on the builder. Manychat’s pricing page, read on 12 Oct 2026 in a browser, shows these monthly prices in US dollars (manychat.com/pricing). Peso figures use USD 1 = PHP 62.821, derived from the ECB euro reference rates for 9 Oct 2026, and are approximate.
| Plan | Monthly price (USD) | Approximate in pesos | Active contacts included | Other limits shown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Free | 25 | 2 channels, up to 4 live triggers, 1 user, Manychat branding |
| Essential | $14 | PHP 879 | 250 | 2 channels, unlimited automations, 2 users, no branding |
| Pro | $29 | PHP 1,822 | 2,500 | 3 channels, Manychat AI, 3 users |
| Business | $69 | PHP 4,335 | 7,500 | Unlimited channels, Manychat AI, 5 users |
| Advanced | $139 | PHP 8,732 | 25,000 | Unlimited channels, Manychat AI, 10 users |

Annual billing is lower per month. The page states that prices exclude tax and depend on the billing country, so your checkout may differ.
Contact-based pricing. Manychat charges by active contacts, which it describes as the people you interact with per month. Each plan includes a number. Beyond it, the page lists a price per extra contact, starting at $0.10 a month on Essential. A comment trigger on a popular post can pass the limit, so check your contact count before a promotion. Whether Manychat bills AI use separately: Not confirmed from the official documentation on 12 Oct 2026.
Checking that it works
Use test accounts. Message the Page from a personal account that is not an admin. Try each button, keyword and comment trigger, on a phone as well as a computer.
Review conversations. Read a sample of real chats each week. Look for questions the bot missed, wrong answers, and customers who asked for a person, and add those cases to the flow. Keep a named owner for the bot, as the AI automation guide advises for any workflow. This is human-in-the-loop practice.
A note on earning bot offers
Searches for “messenger bot” turn up two different things. A business bot answers customers for a Page. A “money bot” or “earning bot” is sold as a way to make income by buying or renting the bot, joining, or recruiting others. They share a word and nothing else.
The Securities and Exchange Commission has published advisories on schemes that use bot names. One read for this page, posted 22 August 2022, states that Universal Bot Corporation / Universal Chatbot Online Shop is not registered as a corporation or partnership and is not authorized to solicit investments from the public (SEC advisory). The SEC keeps a list of advisories and an Investment Scam Checklist. A search of dti.gov.ph on 12 Oct 2026 found no DTI advisory about bot or chatbot earning schemes, so none is cited.
Neutral checks before paying for any bot offer:
- Does the income come from customers buying a product or service, or from new members paying in?
- Is there a fee to join, a license, or a package to unlock earnings?
- Are returns promised as fixed or “unlimited”?
- Is the seller named, with a registered business you can look up?
- Is the name on the SEC advisories list?
A business bot has none of these features. You pay a normal software subscription, and income comes from selling your own goods.
Frequently asked questions
How does a business make a Messenger bot?
Pick a route. Use Meta’s built-in automated responses for greetings, away messages and FAQ replies. Use a bot builder such as Manychat for menus, forms and comment triggers. Add AI answers only after testing. A developer is needed only for a custom bot.
Is there a free Messenger bot for a Facebook Page?
Yes, in two forms. Meta’s built-in automated responses have no listed fee. Manychat’s Free plan, read on 12 Oct 2026, includes 25 active contacts, 2 channels and up to 4 live triggers, with Manychat branding.
What does Meta allow a bot to send, and when?
A business has up to 24 hours to respond after a person acts, and messages inside the window may include promotions. Outside it, approved tags, the 7 day Human Agent tag for manual replies, or marketing messages with opt-in apply. Three older message tags were deprecated from 27 April 2026.
Can a Messenger bot reply to comments?
Yes, through a builder. Manychat documents a trigger for comments on Page posts, with keywords, optional public replies and private replies in Messenger. It does not support Event, Offer or Job posts.
Can a Messenger bot use AI to answer questions?
Yes, in tools that offer it. Manychat’s pricing page lists Manychat AI on Pro and higher plans. AI replies can be wrong, so give them approved information only, test them and keep a route to a person.
Are Messenger earning bots legitimate?
Bots that answer customers for a Page are ordinary software. Offers that sell a bot as a way to earn through joining fees or recruitment are a different matter, and the SEC has posted an advisory on one such name, dated 22 August 2022. Check the SEC advisories list before paying.
